Global Terrorism

The phenomenon of global terrorism was perceived for decades as a multi-lateral system comprising a large number of small and big organizations with hardly any ideological, organizational, and operational relations. This system is gradually changing towards comprising a smaller number of organizations and thus terrorist organizations that have been operating for many years are slowly disappearing from the global map.

A through examination of global terrorism nowadays reveals several primary interesting phenomena:

A) Collaboration between Terrorist Organizations: though adhering to different ideologies and striving to achieve different objectives, these organizations often utilize the same strategies and infrastructures, sometimes even in spite of rivalries.

B) Terrorism at the Service of the State or a Well-known "State Entity": various states worldwide use terrorism as a means of promoting political, national, or economic interests. Serving the interests of their masters, terrorist organizations are then sent to action in ways that blur the connection between states and these organizations.

C) Individual Terrorism: this phenomenon has always been around, but has always been pushed to the side. Today due to technological progress and abundant access to technological operational information and wide media coverage, individual terrorism has attracted much of the public awareness.

D) Return of Maritime Terrorism: maritime terrorism has been repositioned on the map of global terrorism as a means utilized by terrorist organizations to obtain funds or exert pressure on the global economy.
